Red House with Tyler Nail - Joseph (Zack) Brewer, Key City Sessions

It's our local music podcast!
Joseph (Zack) Brewer is the owner/founder/operator/booker of Key City Sessions, a concert series in Wilkesboro NC. We talk about the sessions, religion, condemnation of artists, and more.
Written by J. Zachary Brewer: " I started Key City Sessions in July of 2019 in an apartment I shared at the time with my brother, David, at Key City Condos in North Wilkesboro. Pennsylvania-based songwriter, Alyssa Hankey, and I got in touch over Instagram, and she hadn’t found a good NC venue on her tour. After reaching out to 2 or 3 spots for her to no avail, I decided to use my apartment for my first show in July 2019. The name Key City comes from the old furniture factory that used to be in our area, one of their buildings of which was renovated into condominiums and ultimately my first home. Ultimately, I had a kind HOA who very nicely and appropriately told me it probably wasn’t the best idea to be doing monthly shows in my living quarters. After 5 shows in 2019, Key City Sessions was put on a temporary hold save for 2 events at the homes of some kind friends and concertgoers - Gerianne Hannibal and Anne Showalter - February and July 2020 respectively. Producing and tailoring events to fit my vision of what an intimate, fun, and social concert should be was too important for me to stop in its tracks. I was blessed to find the historic home of Judge Johnson J. Hayes in downtown Wilkesboro was up for sale, and quickly moved on the opportunity in the spring of 2020 after running into options that were not near as promising. The flowing rooms, ample concert space, extra bedrooms for housing touring artists, history (you can find 100-year-old court documents framed on various walls), and prime location downtown fit exactly into the mold of what I needed to continue doing for my community and artists. Living in semi-rural Appalachia where music events, especially diverse ones, are not as common as in the city, it’s crucial for me to provide something unique for those in my area, some of whom may not have the opportunity to experience it otherwise. My shows are donation-based, and I hope to always keep it that way. My doors are always open for good people wanting to get away from their work week and enjoy a night of positive music and for musicians in need of respite. With concerts goers from NC to Virginia and Texas, and musicians from Nashville, Sweden, Israel and beyond, I hope people from around the country and world continue to gather under one roof for a common purpose of enjoying one another’s presence. I give a sincere thanks to those who have helped me in various ways for my concert series, including all of the amazing artists who have performed and continue to do so here at Key City Sessions."
